CBD for Pets: Does Your Pet Need CBD in 2020?

Want to know if CBD can help your pet? You’ve come to the right place! In this huge guide, we’ll cover everything from the science behind CBD for cats and dogs to the best-selling products at CBDVapeJuice.net. Whether you’re just getting acquainted with CBD or want to deepen your understanding, this post will have something for you!

The market for hemp-based CBD products has expanded rapidly in the United States. But alongside the growing demand for CBD for humans is an increasing interest in CBD for pets. This is especially the case among owners who have already benefited from CBD themselves, and are wondering if it could aid their canine or feline.

We’ve got a lot to cover in this guide. So, to make things easier, we’ve attached a Table of Contents below. Use it to skip to the bits you are most interested in. Make sure you keep your eyes peeled for a special 10% CBDVapeJuice.net coupon code. We’ve included it in the second half of this article!

An introduction to CBD for animals

Cannabidiol (CBD), a non-psychoactive cannabinoid produced by hemp and cannabis plants, has gone from a virtual unknown to one of the world’s most popular health and wellness supplements in just a few short years. Interest in CBD and cannabinoids is exploding, and researchers are doing their best to keep up!

Cannabinoids first came to our attention in the mid-20th century. At this time, Israeli experts managed to isolate CBD and delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), the key psychoactive component in cannabis. In the early 1990s, researchers demonstrated that cannabinoids functioned in a newly-discovered biological system. We now call it the endocannabinoid system (ECS). They also learned that the body makes its own cannabinoids, known as endocannabinoids.

Scientists soon confirmed that many life forms have an ECS, including cats and dogs. And it appears this system has existed for hundreds of millions of years. But due to the legal restrictions surrounding cannabis research, we’re only just making these discoveries now.

The upshot is this: we know that CBD has an effect on us and our pets. It’s non-intoxicating, non-addictive and, relative to most drugs, very safe. But we don’t have much evidence on what CBD actually works for, so we can’t make any medical claims about CBD products. However, a handful of pioneering studies and a growing bank of anecdotes from pet owners around the world suggests CBD likely has some powerful therapeutic properties! These could transform pet healthcare moving forward.

Are CBD products safe for pets?

Yes, CBD products are as safe for pets as they are humans. It is, of course, important to ensure you’re buying a high-quality product. That’s why third-party, independent testing has become so common and essential in the industry. This helps weed out the sub-standard and fake brands from the market, while providing authenticity to the brands making genuine products.

That said, you should only give your cat or dog a CBD product manufactured for pets. CBD products for humans may contain ingredients unsuitable for pets. For instance, full-spectrum CBD for humans may have up to 0.3% THC, a level that’s safe for us, but could be harmful for pets.

In the pet scene, products generally contain either CBD-isolate or broad-spectrum CBD. The former consists of pure CBD, while the latter has a full slate of cannabinoids, except for THC. Therefore, broad-spectrum CBD products may be more effective – although the extra cannabinoids do come at an extra cost.

What brand of CBD oil is best for pets?

Several hemp-based CBD brands are in fierce competition to become top dog in the industry. It’s hard to say which company’s products are best, although there are a few things to look for. Longevity in the market is usually a sign of a good brand, and we’ve already stated how important third-party testing is.

At CBDVapeJuice.net, we’ve chosen only the best pet CBD tinctures, soft chews and treats, making your life much easier! The featured brands here all meet our sky-high standards. You’ll have full peace of mind when giving any of these supplements to your pet.

Tinctures or treats: which is best for your pet?

In terms of effects, there’s not much difference between CBD tinctures and treats. With both products, the CBD is taken orally, delivering gradual and sustained benefits.

However, owners often find treats much easier to give to their pets. Tasty soft chews and biscuits are easily gobbled up and give an exact amount of CBD. In contrast, tinctures are more difficult to administer. Owners know exactly how challenging it is to keep their pet still for long enough so they can take their meds!

But tinctures work just as well when mixed with water or wet food, and may even be effective on the skin, a benefit you just can’t get with treats. But when deciding between CBD tinctures and treats for your pet, it mostly comes down to preference.

Popular CBD pet products at CBDVapeJuice.net

With new brands emerging every month, the CBD options for pet owners have never been better. We’re expanding our collection all the time, without compromising on quality. This section covers eight of our most popular CBD tinctures and treats for pets. But you can find even more first-class products on our ‘CBD For Pets’ page!

CBD Dog Treats from CBD Genesis

cbd for dogsOur CBD Genesis Dog Treats are for dogs needing stronger CBD relief. Your four-legged pal will love our tasty chews – available in bacon or cheddar – which come in 25mg and 40mg strengths. We use only organic hemp extracts and eliminate all THC from the final product, and package these treats in smell-proof containers for maximum discretion.

Choose between a 20-pack of 25mg treats or the more potent 25-pack of 40mg treats – that works out to either 500 or 1000mg of CBD per tub! These high-strength CBD chews are ideal for larger dogs who require heftier doses for the same effect. But if you’d prefer to keep your dog on a lower dose, simply split the treats into two and spread the servings out over a few hours.

ecopets for dogsECOPets for Dogs

CBD Drip is renowned for its premium CBD products, and we’re excited to share with you the brand’s tincture oil for dogs. Designed to deliver calm and comfort, the ECOPETS tincture contains more than 1800mg of full-spectrum hemp extract (300mg+ CBD) and fractionated coconut oil. We currently stock ECOPETS in sumptuous bacon and moreish peanut butter.

This organic, vegan-friendly and gluten-free pet CBD oil also boasts essential omega-3 and omega-6 fatty acids, plant sterols, beneficial vitamin E and a whole host of other important nutrients. CBD Drip’s premium blend goes the extra mile to give your doggy a safe and wholesome CBD experience.

Koi CBd Soft ChewsKoi CBD Soft Chews (Dog Treats)

Koi CBD is an old favorite at CBDVapeJuice.net, specializing in hemp-based products for humans and pets. Their CBD soft chews are everything you’d expect from a brand like Koi, manufactured with organic, non-GMO hemp. Each bacon or chicken-flavored treat contains 2.5mg of broad-spectrum, THC-free hemp, with 25 treats to a pack.

At 2.5mg, this is a relatively small serving, but perfect for supplementing your dog’s ECS. And if necessary, you can always treat your dog with a couple of extra chews! Koi’s soft chews are meant to last, and the resealable pack they come in should preserve them for months.

Koi CBD’s chews have received the seal of approval from CannaSafe, a respected independent laboratory that analyses hemp and marijuana products. The lab report, which is available for your perusal, confirms these treats have no THC and are free from any harmful byproducts. Need a safe and dependable CBD pet product? Koi has you covered.

TruBlu Bluefin Tuna (Cat Tincture)

Want to give your feline something special? Then look no further than TruBlu’s delicious Bluefin Tuna CBD cat tincture. Formulated with all American, broad-spectrum, THC-free hemp and fantastic flavorings, your cat will have never had it so good!

Each 1oz tincture contains 250mg of CBD, although TruBlu’s innovative manufacturing process makes it go further than your average CBD product. They use micro-encapsulation and high-speed emulsion methods to level up bioavailability and absorption rates. This makes a big difference since initial research shows that cats don’t absorb traditional CBD as well as dogs!

The CBD market is full of products for dogs and pets in general, but few that cater just to cats. With TruBlu’s tincture oil, you’ll have a product your cat enjoys and, crucially, one that works.

Hempzilla Pet TreatsHempzilla CBD Pet Treats

Hempzilla is a new addition at CBDVapeJuice.net. We also have a pet tincture from this brand, but today we’re going to focus on their treats.

Hempzilla CBD Peanut Butter Pet Treats are infused with organic, non-GMO, full-spectrum hemp, which is rich in terpenes for added effects. They also have organic refined coconut oil, an excellent bioavailability booster. Each treat has 5mg of hemp extract, and is available in packs of five and 20.

Hempzilla products have lab certification, but arguably more impressive is the fact that their hemp is cultivated and processed as part of Colorado’s Department of Agriculture program. The Centennial State is one of America’s most forward-thinking on hemp. When you buy Hempzilla, you know you’re getting premium CBD.

CBD pet tinctureFull-Spectrum CBD Pet Tincture from CBDistillery

CBDistillery firmly endorses full-spectrum hemp, and has brought this philosophy to their pet products. This 600mg full-spectrum tincture from Colorado is suitable for cats and dogs, and has a mega mix of cannabinoids, terpenes and flavonoids to enhance your pet’s health.

This 1oz bottle comes with a dropper that provides 20mg of hemp extract per serving, a pretty high dosage for pets, and cats in particular. Perhaps your pet will need this much, but you can always lower the dose is needed and make the tincture last longer. The CBDistillery Pet Tincture contains cold-pressed hemp seed oil, too, which is bursting with omega-3.

active cbd dog buscuitsActive CBD Oil Dog Treats

Active CBD Oil is another of our newly-introduced brands at CBDVapeJuice.net. We’re big fans of their dog treats, which place a priority on purity. These tasty biscuits contain a mild 2.5mg of CBD per biscuit, and are free from soy, gluten and THC. Even better, Active CBD Oil manufactures and packages its CBD biscuits in a commercially licensed food kitchen.

They recommend giving your dog a biscuit or two as a snack, as part of a healthy diet – they’re also an ideal accompaniment at meal times. Naturally, as biscuits are very dry, make sure your dog always has water close by! Active CBD Oil provides full serving guidelines on the pack, and suggests dosing your dog every four to eight hours.

CBD for Cats and Dogs from Select CBD

Select CBD (also known as Social CBD) is well-known in the industry, and has a stated mission of bringing quality CBD to the market, at prices everybody can afford. They’re also big on accurate information, rightly noting that the internet is awash with misinformation and disinformation, particularly when it comes to health and wellness.

Select CBD’s 750mg Pet Tincture suits both cats and dogs, and consists of a pure CBD-isolate extract, free from any pesky THC. They’ve included fractionated coconut oil rich in MCTs for added bioavailability and more efficient absorption. Picky pets may be best on the unflavored oil, but Select CBD also offers its tincture in Peanut Butter, Bacon, Salmon and Chicken flavors!

5 potential benefits of CBD for pets

We’re in the early days of CBD research – and even more so with pets! As such, we won’t be making any medical claims about CBD, and stress all our CBD products are food supplements.

However, studies into CBD for pets’ benefits are out there, and coupled with anecdotes from pet owners from all corners of the country, we have an initial framework of the ailments CBD could help with. This section looks at five of the most prominent.

Just remember to take all this information as educational, and never attempt to self-medicate your pet. Always contact a vet if your pet is ill, and check with them first if you intend on giving CBD to your cat or dog if they are already on medication.

CBD for pets with seizures

Some pets suffer from epileptic seizures, or ‘fits’. Seizures are caused by irregularities in electrical brain activity, and lead to a loss of muscle control. A pet experiencing an epileptic fit may start to shake for anywhere between a few seconds and a few minutes. Dribbling, glazed eyes, a clamped jaw and uncontrollable bowel movements are also common seizure symptoms.

Encouragingly, CBD was recently approved as an anti-seizure treatment for a handful of epileptic conditions in humans. CBD successfully passed multiple Food and Drug Administration (FDA) clinical trials. Now, attention has turned to pets, with some interesting results already.

In 2019, Colorado State University released a study showing that CBD could decrease seizure frequency in dogs. This first-of-its-kind finding is fascinating, although only nine dogs in the study were treated with CBD (eight showed benefits). The study has set the ball rolling for future research, with a larger study already in progress, along with efforts to zone in on an ideal dose.

Relieving pet anxiety with CBD

All pet owners will remember a time where their feline or canine was overcome with anxiety. Short-term triggers include loud noises (such as from fireworks or young children), while separation from an owner or relocation can set off long-term symptoms.

Anxious pets simply aren’t themselves – excess grooming, reserved behavior and aggressive are a few common symptoms. But any unusual behavior is enough to signify a potential problem.

CBD appears to help humans with anxiety, and may benefit pets in the same way. Anxiety seems to be the result of overactivity in the brain. Promoting calming GABA neurotransmitters, which CBD does, could be an effective remedy.

The best CBD for pets with anxiety is probably a CBD-isolate product, with no other hemp compounds. While CBD is therapeutic, we aren’t so sure about other cannabinoids and terpenes, hence why it’s best to exclude them in this case.

CBD for improved energy levels

Older pets tend to suffer from low energy levels. Lethargy is a sad sight to see for the owner, when their beloved pet no longer has the agility they once did. And it’s not much fun for the cat or dog, either! Whether lethargy is due to age, or a symptom of another condition, CBD may help to put things right.

This is a very tricky – if not impossible – issue to study, so we’re reliant on anecdotes from owners. But reports of CBD promoting an energy boost are not unusual. Since we know CBD is biphasic and that higher amounts have a more pronounced sedative effect, if you want to give your pet a new lease of life, sticking to low dosage may be best.

Soothing pain with CBD

Are you fed up with having to give your pet strong, addictive painkillers that leave them sleepy and lethargic throughout the day? You’re not alone. While the likes of opioids and NSAIDs may have beneficial effects, some pet owners are finding them increasingly unsustainable due to side effects. Those demanding a natural and non-addictive option are looking at CBD – and for good reason!

CBD’s benefits for pain are unclear, in both humans and pets. Clinically proving that CBD has pain-killing properties is difficult. But the popularity of CBD for humans in pains gives reason for optimism. And the anecdotes from owners trying their pets on CBD treats for pain relief are also promising. As CBD carries no significant risks, why not experiment and see if it can alleviate your pet’s discomfort?

CBD for arthritis in pets

Arthritis is an inflammatory illness that affects the joints, causing pain and discomfort. The pain comes from bones rubbing together due to exposure because of joint cartilage deterioration. Cats and dogs with arthritis suffer from reduced mobility, which has an adverse effect on quality of life.

The therapeutic value of cannabinoids for arthritis is pretty well-documented in humans. Some studies even show that CBD has a healing effect on joint cartilage. Through the same ECS mechanisms, CBD may also benefit cats and dogs. A paper exploring CBD for osteoarthritis in dogs found CBD a safe and effective therapy that eased discomfort and improved activity levels.

Consider a broad-spectrum CBD product for pets with arthritis. Several cannabinoids have anti-inflammatory qualities, so a whole-plant extract would likely offer more benefits than an isolated one. Cannabigerol (CBG) is a good example of a non-psychoactive, anti-inflammatory cannabinoid present in many broad-spectrum CBD products.

CBD for pets: dosage advice

How much CBD should you give your pet? Well, how long is a piece of string? The best dosage depends on why your pet needs CBD in the first place and how big they are. As we’ve covered, for higher energy levels, a small dose should suffice. For pain and anxiety relief, larger doses are probably more suitable.

Many CBD companies offer advice on how to best use their products on the packaging. We suggest following these guidelines, and only making tweaks if necessary. If no dosage tips are provided, take a cautious approach and start your pet off on a low dose. This way you can gauge their response to different amounts, and save a few dollars in the process!

Can humans take pet CBD oil?

Technically, there isn’t anything wrong with a human taking a CBD pet product. At least, it’s much worse for a pet to take a CBD product for humans! But a more relevant question is, “Why would you want to?”

Pet CBD tinctures and treats cost more than standard CBD products, as they have to be made with a special formula. Pets have sensitive bodies and can’t handle as much as humans, so we have to make sure we aren’t giving them anything that could cause them harm.

Humans have a much wider range of CBD products available, and at better prices, too! But to get back to the original question, if you’re stuck in a jam and only have a CBD pet oil to hand, taking it as a one-off is okay.

Can I give my pet a CBD gummy?

No, CBD gummies are for humans, not pets! In all seriousness, it’s simply not safe to give CBD products that are meant for us to our furry pals. For example, imagine you have a full-spectrum gummy. By law, these can have up to 0.3% THC. That’s not enough to have a psychoactive effect in humans, but that amount of such a potent compound could be dangerous for pets.

There are CBD products made especially for pets for a reason. And think of it like this: you’re giving CBD to your pet to improve their health. What’s the point in risking making them worse with a product they shouldn’t be taking? Always be sensible and use CBD responsibly, whether for yourself, or your pet!

Will CBD help my pet sleep?

There’s no solid evidence, but judging by our understanding of CBD, it could help improve your pet’s sleep quality. Sedation is a standout feature of large CBD dosages, and the all-body relaxation should have a similar effect in pets as it does for us.

Beyond simply helping with sleep, studies show that the ECS is also involved with sleep regulation. Our bodies have a sleep-wake cycle, and hormones are released and suppressed at various points of the day to help us wake up and nod off. As CBD regulates the ECS, it may also indirectly regulate the sleep-wake cycle.

Future studies looking at CBD for sleep (in humans and pets) should confirm just how useful it is, and what dosage yields the best effect.

Do vets recommend CBD oil?

With CBD not an approved medicine for pets, don’t expect your vet to be recommending it any time soon – at least not on the record. But as with doctors, some vets take a more liberal approach with CBD than others.

A vet unfamiliar with hemp will probably be solidly against it, but those up to speed and with an understanding of the ECS might have a different attitude. Try and seek out a vet who is at least familiar with CBD. They will be best-placed to give you legitimate and unbiased advice. Many vets are beginning to recognize the need for new treatments, and have an open mind toward CBD, particularly with positive research now trickling in.

Can animals overdose on CBD oil?

CBD is extremely well-tolerated in humans, and the same appears true in pets. However, as pets are smaller than us, it’s logical that their tolerance levels are lower than ours. Studies are yet to push the boundaries when it comes to just how much CBD a pet can handle.

However, if pets can overdose on CBD oil, it’s probably only from extremely high amounts – more than you’d get in any bottle. So there’s no reason to be concerned if you’ve given your pet a double dose – worst-case scenario, they’ll just be pretty sleepy for a few hours!

How long does it take for CBD oil to start working in pets?

The beauty of CBD products is that they get to work quickly. A dose of CBD oil should start showing benefits within 30 minutes to an hour of consumption, with the effects lasting for anywhere between four and six hours. Allow for some variance in these timings depending on your pet’s body weight and diet.

As a rule of thumb, if a dose doesn’t seem to be having its desired effect after 90 minutes or so, go ahead and give your pet a top up. It’s best to wait than be hasty about re-dosing.

How long will CBD oil stay in my pet’s system?

CBD oil could stay in your pet’s system for a week or more, although the effects wear off after a few hours. But as CBD doesn’t have any intoxicating effects – and your pet doesn’t have to worry about drug tests! – this isn’t really anything to worry about.

Can CBD oil give dogs diarrhea?

When it comes to a pet’s health, CBD is generally viewed as a good thing. However, there are some possible side effects, and diarrhea is one. In addition to diarrhea, humans, cats and dogs may experience drowsiness, dizziness and vomiting symptoms from CBD.

But all three are rare, and are not necessarily caused by the CBD itself. These side effects just underline the importance of getting legit CBD from respected brands. A high-quality product won’t have any impurities, making it less likely to trigger any negative health effects.

What happens if you give a pet too much CBD?

Probably not a lot. In the context of regular CBD pet products, there’s not really any such thing as too much CBD. Sure, you can give your pet more than intended, but it’s not about to do them any serious harm. Like in humans, a double-dose of CBD will most likely just leave your pet in a super-relaxed and sleepy mood. The effects would probably be fairly similar to strong painkillers.

Can you put CBD oil in a dogs’ ears?

Ear infections in dogs are pretty notorious – these pesky infections tend to stick around for a few weeks or months. This may make life fairly uncomfortable for your dog. So, could CBD come to the rescue?

There’s no compelling research on CBD for ear infections in dogs, but we can glean some info from a handful of stories in cyberspace. Ear infections are painful, and many believe CBD helps with pain, and there’s evidence showing it curbs inflammation. Compared to NSAIDs, which are often prescribed for ear infections, CBD oil seems like a no-brainer.

As for putting it in your dog’s ear, topical administration is possible. Cannabinoid receptors are expressed in dog skin, meaning CBD can have an effect. However, it may not be the most economical use of CBD. Giving CBD to your dog in the regular way could also aid ear infections. If you’ve got plenty of CBD oil to hand, you could try topical and oral administration at the same time for increased chance of success!
